About : James Collings

About me

I am a Computer Science graduate based in London. I finished my BSc (Hons) at Aberystwyth University in June 2026 with a high 2:1, and my final year centred on an embedded systems major project: a Raspberry Pi Pico web controller for professional RS232 CD players.

The work I enjoy most sits where software meets the hardware or the operating system underneath it. That has meant serial protocols and GPIO on a microcontroller, Core Audio device handling on macOS, and writing a language interpreter in C from the lexer upwards. I like understanding a layer rather than treating it as somebody else's abstraction.

I also ship things. Studying is one signal, but I think the more useful one is whether other people can install your software and understand it. MicGuard and my foobar2000 component are the clearest examples: both started as problems on my own machine, both have documentation, build instructions and users who are not me.

Accessibility shows up in my work as a design constraint rather than a checkbox. Goblin Box is a local dictation and transcription tool built for people who find writing harder than it should be, and thinking about defaults, wording and friction there changed how I approach interfaces generally.
